authors when insulin was given subcutaneously. In this instance, in contrast to intravenous injection, the slow absorption limits the concentration of insulin in the blood to low levels. In consequence, the results obtained imitated those found following the intravenous injection of tolbutamide, namely, a suppression of glucose entry from the liver into the blood stream shown by plateauing of the specific activity of the blood glucose but no peripheral increase of glucose utilization. Presumably as in the administration of tolbutamide, the concentration of insulin in the blood is increased but its action is limited to the liver. These conclusions, in agreement with those of the other two papers, are in accord with the [3-cytotropic hypothesis of the action of the arylsulfonylureas.

On the mechanism through which obstructive jaundice influences inflammatory processes.

A variety of experiments on animals had shown that the antiphlogistic effect of systemic stress is largely non-specific, in that it can be elicited by various agents and is effective in suppressing inflammation in various sites. For instance, systemic stress induced by diverse procedures, if it is sufficiently severe to elicit an intense general adaptation syndrome, markedly inhibits the so-cal...

The stress response to environmental change in captive cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus).

The captive North American cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) population is not self-sustaining because of high prevalences of unusual diseases and poor reproductive success. Cheetahs are commonly moved between zoos for breeding purposes to maintain genetic diversity within the captive population, and movement may exacerbate infertility and disease. Fecal corticoids were analyzed by radioimmunoassay to...

Endogenous corticoids increased survival time of rats exposed to a hypoxic (5% 0,) atmosphere, since sh...

Diabetes and Oxidative Stress: The Mechanism and Action

Abstract Diabetes mellitus is one of the major metabolic disorders. Diabetes is recognized for severe complications including diabetic nephropathy, neuropathy and retinopathy. Long-lasting effect of hyperglycemia results in increased oxidative stress. Oxidative stress results from an imbalance between radical-generating and radical scavenging systems. Increased oxidative stress has been shown ...

Association of Psychosocial Stress and Periodontal Disease

Stress is found to be a predictive factor of periodontal disease. Among proposed mechanisms that mediate possible association between psychosocial factors and periodontitis status, immunological pathways are of great importance. Depressed immune responsiveness, as a result of physical or mental stress, influences stress-released hormones (gluco corticoids), which are present in the gingival cre...
